The Mujahideen were trained by the CIA to fight off the Soviets, once the Soviets left, the Mujahideen would eventually become the Taliban and Al Queda. Both funded and trained by the CIA.

Tie in the poppy fields in Afghanistan and one trillion dollars worth in minerals and you have an endless war and an drug trafficking cartel all funded by US, the American taxpayer costing hundreds of thousands of lives.
