The US Department of Defense awarded SpaceX a $150 million contract to launch the first set of hypersonic missile defense satellites. This is SpaceX's second such contract, and its value is similar to that of SpaceX's development contract. In this project, SpaceX and L3Harris Technologies, a Florida-based defense firm, will create a network of dozens of satellites across all continents.
SpaceX got a $150 million defense contract to launch the first hypersonic missile defense satellites. And a number of other companies, including Lockheed Martin and York Space Systems of Denver, are also involved in building the network's spacecraft. According to George Nacouzi, a senior engineer at the Rand Corporation, a non-profit think tank for the defense industry, the development is a response to the developing hypersonic capabilities of Russia and China. He added, “The project is focused on launching a demonstration mission now, but I don’t know if they’ll build the whole system as intended.”
SpaceX and L3Harris will build four missile detection satellites each for the launch in 2022. However, a communication satellite developed by Lockheed Martin and York will be used to relay information about the location and trajectory of hypersonic missiles.
