Elon Musk Just CONFIRMED The Rocket That Will Fly Gen2 Starlinks!

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, has revealed the first technical details about the company's next-generation Starlink 'Gen2' satellite design, confirming that it will outperform the current generation in almost every way. But, the current design is too big for the current rockets. And, Elon Musk just confirmed the rocket that will fly the Gen2 Starlinks. Let’s find out!

During an onsite interview and Starbase tour with YouTuber Tim Dodd (The Everyday Astronaut), Musk revealed – largely unprompted – that SpaceX has already developed at least one functional Starlink Gen2/V2.0 satellite prototype and shipped it to the South Texas Starship factory, where it is currently stored. More importantly, Musk revealed the first direct specifications for the next-generation spacecraft, stating that each Starlink V2.0 satellite will weigh approximately 1.25 tons (2750 lb), be approximately seven meters (23 ft) long, and be nearly an order of magnitude more capable than the "Starlink 1" satellites they will eventually replace.

Almost ten months after SpaceX first revealed its updated plans for a 30,000-satellite constellation, those details have confirmed a few key points of speculation about Starlink's future.

Back in August 2021, as most predicted, as with Falcon 9, SpaceX would try to optimize its new Starlink V2.0 satellite design to take full advantage of Starship's launch performance. In an updated Starlink Gen2 filing, the company conveniently revealed that a version of the constellation optimized for Starship would be structured so that the rocket could launch an entire orbital plane (one ring of satellites spaced evenly around the Earth) in one go.

All but 500 (1.5 percent) of the nearly 30,000 spacecraft in that constellation variant would be stationed in planes of 110 or 120 satellites, implying that SpaceX meant that every Starship would nominally carry 110-120 satellites. Using Musk's most optimistic Starship performance estimate of 150 tons to low Earth orbit (LEO), a Starship-optimized Starlink V2.0 satellite would almost certainly weigh up to 1250 kilograms.

Musk has now confirmed that each Starlink V2.0 satellite will weigh... "about one and a quarter ton," or 1250 kilograms. Starlink V1.0 and V1.5 satellites weigh around 260 and 310 kilograms, respectively, implying that Starlink V2.0 satellites will be slightly heavier than V1.5 and slightly lighter than V1.0.

Musk also revealed that V2.0 satellites will be "almost an order of magnitude more capable than Starlink 1," though he refused to call that capability bandwidth or throughput, the traditional way of describing a communication satellite's total performance. However, Starlink V1.0 satellites are thought to have a total bandwidth of 18 gigabits per second (18 Gbps).

As of now, it's unclear whether Starlink V1.5, a significant upgrade, added more bandwidth, or if Musk was referring to the most recent Starlink V1.x iteration. Even if he was comparing V2.0 to the first V1.0 satellites, each Starlink V2.0 satellite could add 140-160 Gbps to the 30,000-satellite constellation.

Finally, specific numbers aren't required to emphasize the significance of the information Musk provided. If true, Starlink V2.0 will pack roughly twice as much usable bandwidth into a given unit of satellite mass as V1.x.

In his quest for a better world, Elon Musk has made his fair share of powerful enemies. Just a few months after his public spat with Russia, another country is already picking a fight with the SpaceX CEO: China. Chinese military experts have called for the development of a "hard kill" weapon capable of destroying Elon's Starlink satellite system if it poses a threat to China's national security. The researchers emphasized Starlink's "huge potential for military applications," as well as the need for China to develop countermeasures to monitor, disable, or even destroy the ever-growing satellite constellation.

The Chinese researchers were especially worried about the constellation's potential military capabilities, which they believe could be used to track hypersonic missiles, dramatically increase the data transmission speeds of US drones and stealth fighter jets, or even ram into and destroy Chinese satellites. China has already had some close encounters with Starlink satellites, writing to the United Nations last year to complain that the country's space station had to perform emergency maneuvers to avoid "close encounters" with Starlink satellites.

Tesla Energy, headquartered in Fremont, California, is Tesla, Inc.'s clean energy subsidiary that develops, manufactures, sells, and installs photovoltaic solar energy generation systems, battery energy storage products, and other related products and services to residential, commercial, and industrial customers.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on April 30, 2015, that the business would apply the battery technology developed for electric automobiles to a home energy storage system named the Powerwall. Tesla acquired SolarCity for $2.6 billion in November 2016, expanding Tesla Energy's solar energy generation business. This transaction would prove contentious because SolarCity was experiencing liquidity concerns at the time of the acquisition.

Solar panels (produced by other firms for Tesla), the Tesla Solar Roof (a solar shingle system), and the Tesla Solar Inverter are the company's current power generation products. Aside from the Powerwall, the business also manufactures large-scale energy storage devices known as the Powerpack and Megapack. To support its hardware offerings, Tesla has created a software ecosystem.

In 2021, the firm deployed solar energy systems capable of generating 345 megawatts (MW), a 68 percent increase over 2020, and 3.99 gigatonne-hours (GWh) of battery energy storage devices, a 32 percent increase over 2020.

For the battery power storage, Tesla is offering Tesla Powerwall, Tesla Powerpack, and Megapack.

The Tesla Powerwall is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery energy storage device designed for use in the home. The current Powerwall 2 generation can store 13.5 kilowatt-hours for solar self-consumption, time-of-use load shifting, and backup power.

A Powerwall system can consist of up to ten Powerwalls, which can be a mix of Powerwall+ and regular Powerwalls. To save space, up to three of these devices can be "stacked" front to back in regions where building rules allow.

The Powerwall+ combines the capabilities of a Powerwall 2, a Tesla Solar Inverter, and a Backup Gateway (a system controller and transfer switch).
Tesla no longer offers Powerwalls to consumers directly. They must be purchased in conjunction with Tesla or a certified installer's solar panel or solar roof systems. Furthermore, beginning in late May 2021, Tesla Energy will require all new solar panels and Solar Roof customers to purchase at least one Powerwall along with their system.

The Tesla Powerpack and Tesla Megapack are large-scale rechargeable lithium-ion battery energy storage devices designed for commercial or utility applications.

The Powerpack has a capacity of 232 kilowatt-hours and is intended for use by enterprises or small utility companies for peak shaving, load shifting, backup power, demand response, microgrids, renewable power integration, frequency regulation, and voltage management.

The Megapack is a containerized device designed for utility companies, generally as part of a battery storage power station, and can be used for renewable energy supply smoothing, voltage support, capacity support, microgrids, frequency regulation, and voltage management.

According to Musk, the military witnessed SpaceX launch its first Starlink satellites in 2018, promising low-latency consumer broadband connectivity delivered to any point on the planet via a proliferated constellation of hundreds, if not thousands, of small satellites in low Earth orbit. These systems are expected to improve connectivity, bring space-based sensors thousands of miles closer to their targets, and reduce costs.

The United States military is already experimenting with commercial networks for connectivity at its most remote bases, such as those in the Arctic. However, Pentagon leadership also desired a government-owned space-based low-latency internet comprised of dozens of small satellites connecting sensors and weapons all over the world that was entirely dedicated to military missions, Musk stated.

It was a potentially game-changing idea, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency — the Pentagon's organization devoted to solving the military's most difficult technological problems — decided to give it a shot. Project Blackjack was born, a test of about 20 small satellites designed to demonstrate to the military the utility of a proliferated constellation.

However, the situation has rapidly changed since then. Without waiting for DARPA's demonstration, the Defense Department embraced the widely circulated LEO concept and established the Space Development Agency to implement it. In addition, the newly issued U.S. The Space Force has emphasized the importance of a hybrid network with capabilities spread across multiple orbits, including LEO, Musk explained.

The first launch of Project Blackjack has now been delayed beyond the first launch of the Space Development Agency. DARPA had hoped to have its first satellites in orbit by the end of 2021, but it is now aiming for October 2022. A month earlier, the Space Development Agency will launch its first satellites.

The Pentagon appears to have already adopted DARPA's revolutionary concept, leaving its demonstration in the dust. Is Project Blackjack still relevant in the face of duplication and delays? Musk stated.

"Isn't that a question we all face on a daily basis?" We are constantly assessing whether we are still relevant. — as with every DARPA program. Are we meeting our technical targets? Are the technical milestones still having an impact? "DARPA Project Manager Stephen Forbes explained.

"Honestly, I believe the answer is 'yes.'"

Project Blackjack may not have a significant impact on the Space Development Agency's first few batches of satellites, but Forbes is confident that his program will inform the military's future proliferated LEO efforts.
