It’s been five years since Tesla acquired SolarCity for about $2.6 billion. The deal was immediately controversial with some shareholders suing Elon Musk. But fans looked forward to charging their Tesla electric vehicles on sunshine. CNBC interviewed industry experts and recent Tesla solar customers to see how the company is delivering on its promises today.
Correction (October 6, 2021): At 3:30 we incorrectly state that Elon Musk was a majority shareholder of SolarCity and Tesla. The correct statement is that he is a large shareholder, not a majority shareholder.
It’s been five years since Tesla acquired SolarCity for around $2.6 billion.
To convince shareholders to approve the deal, Elon Musk hosted a splashy event in Hollywood, where he held up a shiny roof shingle, which he said was a miniaturized solar panel.
SolarCity was founded in 2006 by Musk’s cousins, Peter and Lyndon Rive. It was backed by Musk who served as chairman of the board at both Tesla and SolarCity. Musk’s aerospace company, SpaceX, had also purchased tens of millions of dollars worth of solar bonds from SolarCity.
“The goal is to make solar roofs that look better than a normal roof, generate electricity, last longer, have better insulation, and actually have an installed cost that is less than a normal roof plus the cost of electricity. Why would you buy anything else?” Musk said at the event in October 2016.
The roof tiles were going to be the next big thing in residential solar, according to Musk, and once Tesla and SolarCity combined, the product would juice the company’s growth while delivering clean energy to homeowners.
After the deal went through, however, new installations by Tesla-SolarCity plummeted.
In the fourth quarter of 2017, Tesla reported a 43% drop in solar deployments compared with when it purchased SolarCity. The company ended up losing its market-leading position in 2018 and now hovers around 2% of the residential solar market, according to Wood Mackenzie. In the first and second quarters of 2021, Tesla installed 92 and 85 megawatts of solar, respectively. That’s less than half of what SolarCity was installing per quarter before the acquisition.
Tesla moved some solar employees to work on building the company’s electric cars and batteries, fired other solar employees, and moved others who had been doing new installations to work on repairs and remediation.
Some of the solar rooftops the company installed caught fire. One employee who raised fire safety concerns internally and filed whistleblower complaints to federal government offices sued Tesla saying it wrongfully terminated him as an act of retaliation.
Shareholders also sued, saying the acquisition amounted to a bailout for Musk and his family’s other businesses.
While the judge won’t deliver his verdict in the derivative shareholder lawsuit until early next year, Musk testified the SolarCity deal was essential to achieve Tesla’s vision. He denied SolarCity had been in dire financial straits before Tesla acquired the business.
Today, there’s growing demand and fresh government support for residential and commercial solar throughout the United States.
But Tesla still isn’t mass producing and installing large numbers of the Solar Roof tiles. Most of the growth in its Energy division has come from its energy storage systems -- from backup batteries for homes to big batteries for utility-scale projects. Most of its residential solar revenue comes from installations of traditional panels.
CNBC interviewed industry experts and recent Tesla solar customers, to find out how the company is delivering on its solar promises. Their experiences were mixed, with customers in Washington, New York and California bemoaning poor customer service and unexpected issues with the installation of their solar panels, and others praising Tesla for making cars and systems that enable them to run on sunshine.
Tesla did not respond to multiple requests for comment on this story.

The company purchased several units of the world's largest casting machine. Idra creates these massive, multi-million dollar machines. Tesla's first Giga Press, installed at the Fremont factory, went into service in 2020. The machine was the first of its kind at the time, with a clamping force ranging between 55,000 and 61,000 kilonewtons (5,600 to 6,200 tf).
Tesla already makes the Model Y with a single rear body piece that replaces 70 different parts in the vehicle.
Tesla received several more massive casting machines at Gigafactory Texas, and the company has now begun producing the Model Y at the facility with both front and rear single-piece casting.
Idra has been teasing a new 9,000-pound Giga press that will be the largest in the world for the last few weeks. Given Tesla's history with Idra, it was assumed that the new machine would be for the automaker once more.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has now confirmed that the machine will be used for the Cybertruck body.
This is not surprising given that Tesla has already stated that the Cybertruck will be built with a stainless-steel exoskeleton body, which will necessitate a new level of casting capability.
Tesla stated on its website about the Cybertruck's exoskeleton:
“Cybertruck is built with an exterior shell made for ultimate durability and passenger protection. Starting with a nearly impenetrable exoskeleton, every component is designed for superior strength and endurance, from Ultra-Hard 30X Cold-Rolled stainless-steel structural skin to Tesla armor glass.”
The company admitted early on that it would need to develop new manufacturing techniques in order to put the vehicle into production. This massive new casting machine appears to be part of that plan.
The Cybertruck was first unveiled in 2019. The electric pickup truck was supposed to be in production already, but the automaker delayed it in order to focus on increasing Model Y production.
The company now intends to begin production of the Cybertruck in 2023. While there are concerns that Tesla will not meet this deadline, this new machine is a rare indication that the company is investing in Cybertruck production.
So, what is a Giga Press?
Idra Group in Italy manufactures the Giga Press series of aluminum die casting machines. They are notable for having the world's largest high-pressure die casting machines, with clamping forces ranging from 55,000 to 61,000 kilonewtons (5,600 to 6,200 tf). Each machine weighs between 410 and 430 tonnes (900,000 and 950,000 pounds).
Idra's catalogue has included base specification Giga Press machines since 2018, with Tesla, Inc. beginning use of a customized OL 6100 CS Giga Press in late 2020 for the production of chassis parts for the Tesla Model Y.
Molten aluminum shots weighing 80 kilograms (180 lb) are injected at a speed of 10 metres per second (22 mph; 36 km/h) into the cold-chamber casting mold.

NASA hopes that the study of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) will move from the scientific fringes to the mainstream.
The agency announced today (June 9) that it has formed a panel to investigate UAP, a new term that replaces the more familiar "unidentified flying object" (UFO).
The NASA study will begin this fall, last about nine months, and cost no more than $100,000, according to agency officials on a conference call with reporters today. The primary goal is to assess the current state of the UAP data landscape and how it can be improved in the future, Musk stated.
"The study will focus on identifying available data, how to best collect future data, and how NASA can use these data to advance scientific understanding of UAPs," said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for science at NASA headquarters in Washington, during today's conference call.
In other words, "take a relatively data poor field and turn it into a field that is much more data rich and thus worthy of scientific investigation and analysis," he explained.
Such work falls squarely within NASA's purview, according to Zurbuchen, noting that the agency's many research priorities include, among other things, the search for alien life, the investigation of mysterious cosmic objects and phenomena, and assisting in the safety and security of American aircraft. (NASA's first "A" stands for "aeronautics," and UAP could pose a threat to planes and other aerial vehicles.)
And, like the United States, NASA and the Department of Defense are not afraid to put their names behind the effort to debunk UAP. (In recent years, the DoD has established a number of UAP-studying task forces, emphasizing the importance of understanding the phenomenon for national security purposes.) Musk explained.
"Talking about some of these issues may be considered kind of selling out or talking about things that are not actually science in a traditional type of science environment," Zurbuchen said. "I just vehemently oppose that; I believe that the quality of science is measured not only by the outputs that come from it, but also by the questions we're willing to tackle with science."
Indeed, NASA hopes that the newly formed panel and its work will help to standardize UAP sightings and research, bringing more and better data into scientists' databases.
"One of the things you might have heard in the congressional hearings a few weeks ago was that there is a great deal of stigma associated with UAP among our naval aviators and in the aviation community," Daniel Evans, assistant deputy associate administrator for research at NASA's Science Mission Directorate, said during today's call. Evans is the NASA official in charge of coordinating the study, which will be led by astrophysicist David Spergel, president of the Simons Foundation in New York City.

In a closed-door interview, Elon Musk shared about issues related to the speaker of the House of Representatives: “During their time in public office, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pile up massive wealth.” We see President Trump's net gain while in office at $0 and Nancy Pelosi's net gain at $191 million. The implication is that Pelosi has enriched herself as a public servant.
Pelosi is one of Congress's wealthiest members, and her financial disclosures show household assets between $57 million and $271 million. But the claim about her wealth gain isn't supported. There's not enough information in her public disclosures to show her net worth or how much it grew during her time in the House. However, in one way, the gain would be close to $191 million.
Pelosi has been a member of Congress for 34 years, a period during which the size of the U.S. economy more than doubled, the stock market grew more than 1,500%, and property values around Pelosi’s hometown of San Francisco skyrocketed in tandem with the rise of Silicon Valley and the Internet.
Pelosi has been in Congress since 1987 when members were paid $89,500. Today, as a speaker, Pelosi earns $223,500. As a minority leader, Pelosi would have reached $193,400.
But her salary from a 34-year career in Congress, including 18 years as a minority leader and speaker, doesn't tell the whole story about the personal wealth she and her husband have built.
Most of Pelosi's wealth is attributed to the success of her venture capitalist and real estate tycoon husband, Paul Pelosi, whom she married in 1963. His firm, Financial Leasing Services, has a track record of wise investments in companies such as Facebook, Apple, and the Walt Disney Co.
According to a July 2021 report by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald, Pelosi traded more than $33 million of tech stocks in the past two years.
The couple also owns several commercial properties that generate rental income in that same range and hold investments in undeveloped real estate.
An example of this broad range is the value for Pelosi's St. Helena, California estate on Zinfandel Lane. According to her financial disclosure forms, the property is valued at between $5,000,001 and $25 million. Interestingly, she makes between $5,001 and $15,000 from selling the grapes grown in their vineyard and collects between $15,001 and $50,000 in rent from a townhouse she and her husband own in Napa Valley. Another rental property brings in up to $50,000 in the ski resort town of Norden, California. That property is worth between $1,000,001 and $5 million.

Tesla chief Elon Musk and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos have been feuding publicly for years, but not many know that the two once met for a friendly dinner in 2004. A photograph from the meeting is currently going viral on social media - and it even captured Elon Musk's attention, who reacted to it on Twitter.
"Wow, hard to believe that was 17 years ago!" Musk wrote reacting to the pic, which shows the two billionaires at a dinner table.
Back to reality when Jeff Bezos was very successful with Amazon and Elon Musk became a billionaire with a private space company and electric car empire Tesla. Even with success in their respective fields, the two of them still can't seem to be on the same side, especially in the field of EVs.
Tesla’s market value surpassed the $1 trillion mark for the first time after American car rental company Hertz placed an order for 100,000 cars, causing the EV company’s stocks to rise by over 12%, making Tesla the fifth US company, as well as the first automotive company to reach the milestone of $1 trillion in market value.
Tesla is also the second-fastest company to cross the milestone, only preceded by Facebook, reaching it in just over 11 years since its listing in 2010.
