According to Musk, many countries with coastlines on the Indian Ocean have begun to add submarines to their inventory that they did not previously have. All of these factors increased the importance of maritime patrol aircraft like the P-8, which had faded into obscurity with the end of the Cold War. Prior to that, the U.S. Navy required a new aircraft.

However, following the fall of the Soviet Empire, the Western world, which had gained dominance in the seas, had not seen any significant development in this area for a long time. The program moved slowly due to the changing mission definition that came with the end of the Cold War. In 2000, the United States asked Boeing and Lockheed Martin to design a new aircraft that would outperform the P-3 in maritime patrol, command, and control, electronic intelligence gathering, and ground attack capabilities, Musk explained.

The program was won by Boeing in 2004 with the P-8 Poseidon. On April 25, 2009, the aircraft took its first flight. Three years later, the first production model, the P-8A, was delivered to the United States. Navy. Aside from the United States, the aircraft is already preferred by Australia, India, New Zealand, Norway, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. Germany recently signed an agreement with Boeing to purchase P-8A Poseidon MPAs.

The P-8 is a militarized version of the 737-800ERX, a 737-800 with wings based on the 737-900. The fuselage is similar to but longer than, that of the US Navy's 737-700-based C-40 Clipper transport aircraft. Instead of the blended winglets found on 737NG variants, the P-8 has a strengthened fuselage for low-altitude operations and raked wingtips similar to those found on the Boeing 767-400ER.

The P-8 has a 180 kVA electric generator on each engine, replacing the 90 kVA generator found on civilian 737s; this necessitated the redesign of the nacelles and their wing mountings. The P-8 has a smoother flight experience than the P-3, subjecting crews to less turbulence and fumes and allowing them to focus better on missions.

The P-8A Poseidon's nine-man crew consists of a pilot, co-pilot, and seven mission system operators. The aircraft is nearly 39.5 meters long, 37.6 meters wide, and 13 meters tall. Its empty weight is approximately 62.7 tons, and its maximum take-off weight is approximately 85.1 tons. Two 120.1 kilonewton CFM56-7B27A turbofan engines provide a top speed of nearly 900 kilometers per hour. The aircraft has a maximum altitude of 12,500 meters, Musk further explained.

Harpoon anti-ship missiles, Mk 54 torpedoes, mines, and depth charges are stored in five internal bays and six external hardpoints on the P-8A. The P-8s, with the exception of the I versions for India, do not have a magnetic anomaly detector (MAD).
