auto software! Tesla has, in the past, unlocked more battery capacity over the air,
although not everybody liked the idea! Over the years, Tesla has refined its user
interface so much that drivers use it without even thinking about it! Tesla even has
games for you to play on your center console and Netflix for the times you want to chill
inside your car! While that might be controversial sometimes, it shows how seriously
Tesla takes software! That’s not to talk of hidden Easter eggs that make the ownership
experience much more exciting!
This is why Musk said the Model S was not a car but a sophisticated computer on
wheels! Here is how Musk described Tesla, “Tesla is a software company as much as it
is a hardware company. A huge part of what Tesla is, is a Silicon Valley software
company. We view this the same as updating your phone or your laptop.”

That was back in 2015! Since then, Tesla has improved in both hardware and software,
but the company is still as focused on the software! Most recently, Tesla’s AI head,
Andrej Karpathy, describes Tesla's car like this: “We are effectively building a synthetic
animal from the ground up. The car can be thought of as an animal. It moves around
autonomously, senses the environment, and acts autonomously.”
One aspect that has been driving Tesla’s innovation in the computing space is its self-
driving technology! Many Tesla owners swear by the self-driving capabilities of their
cars! While the capabilities are amazing, a Tesla car driving itself or working
autonomously requires large amounts of computing power! However, using existing
computing technologies is providing Tesla with sub-par results. And as usual, when
Musk can’t get what he wants, he builds it! This is why Tesla unveiled the near-quantum
Dojo, a supercomputer it built in-house by Tesla!
The near-quantum computer Dojo is every bit a supercomputer. It is very complex and
powerful. Tesla required a computer platform for taking its self-driving technology to the
next level but, since Musk could not shop for what he needed, he made the near-
quantum computerDojo, powered by the Dojo D1 chip, which provides stunning
bandwidth and compute performance. This is what will train Tesla’s massive neural
networks. But the company has hinted they might provide Dojo its near-quantum
computing to other companiess developing AI in the near future, bringing the benefits of
Dojo to more of humanity!
Tesla is building Dojo its near-quantum supercomputer to handle the massive amount of
video data captured from over their large fleet of existing vehicles, which it uses to train
its neural nets. Tesla was not satisfied with other HPC or High-Performance Computing
options for training its computer vision neural nets and decided they could create a
better platform.

Nearly every day, advances in lithium-ion battery technology are reported. "I can't keep up with everything," Musk admits. Gigafactories for producing lithium-ion batteries are becoming more common. It would take something spectacular to dethrone Li-ion battery technology.

Nonetheless, lithium has a fundamental issue. The element is in such high demand for uses such as electric vehicles, portable electronic devices, and stationary energy units that lithium mining businesses are having difficulty keeping up. "The price of lithium will remain high," Musk stated.

Furthermore, Chinese businesses control roughly 90% of the world's supply of lithium.
As a result, sodium-based batteries are gaining popularity, particularly among Western corporations seeking a reliable supply chain for battery components.

"The price of lithium has skyrocketed! Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, tweeted on April 8. "Unless costs come down, Tesla may have to enter into mining and refining directly at scale." "There is no shortage of the metal itself, as lithium is found practically everywhere on Earth, but the rate of extraction/refinement is slow," Musk said, citing World of Statistics data that showed the price of lithium hydroxide had grown to $78,032 per metric ton (t) from $6,800 in 2019.

Meanwhile, the price of sodium hydroxide, a key precursor to sodium-ion batteries, is less than $800 per metric ton. Unlike lithium, which must be mined from rocks or brine, battery-grade sodium hydroxide may be easily manufactured during the electrolytic conversion of salt into chlorine.

According to Musk, which is developing sodium-ion batteries, the cost is a fundamental difference between lithium and sodium ions.

"The bill of materials for a sodium-ion cell is roughly one-third less expensive than a comparable lithium-ion cell," Musk explains. "Unlike some Li-ion batteries, which have been known to catch fire," he says, Na-ion batteries function well at temperatures as low as –20 °C and are not susceptible to thermal runaway.

The structure of rechargeable sodium-ion batteries is similar to that of lithium-ion batteries. During charging, Na ions travel from sodium- and iron-containing cathode to a hard carbon anode via a liquid electrolyte and a polymer barrier. The sodium ions are discharged from the anode to the cathode.

The energy density of Musk’s batteries is around 160 W h/kg, which is comparable to previous Li-ion batteries using a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode. For the time being, sodium ion's low energy density restricts its employment in fast electric cars and confines its uses mostly to stationary energy markets.

Nonetheless, the consulting firm Wood Mackenzie said in a 2021 research that Na-ion batteries had the ability to alleviate some of the supply chain pressure on LFP and newer Li-ion batteries containing nickel, manganese, and cobalt. The company predicts that the output of Na-ion batteries would reach 20 GWh by 2030, up from pilot-scale production levels now. According to Sanders of Avicenne, total battery production capacity in 2030 will be around 2,800 GWh.

I've been a #Tesla fan for a long time but now I realize how far ahead Tesla is technologically.

I can use the Tesla app to manage many different things on my #Model3 from anywhere - see its location, interior temperature, check if it's charging, view the battery range, turn on heat or AC, remotely unlock or lock the doors, open the frunk/trunk, honk the horn and flash the lights.

As long as I have my smartphone with Bluetooth enabled, the Model 3 senses when I'm near the car and it will automatically unlock when I press to open the door, and it's ready to drive when I sit.

Windshield wipers can be set to Auto which will enable the wipers to automatically turn themselves on and off based on off it's raining or not.

The Trip Planner is great because when you type in a destination that is more distance than your current battery range, it will show you which Superchargers you need to stop at and how long you need to charge in order to get to your destination without running out of battery.

It allows music playback through Bluetooth from a smartphone but what I really love is that the Model 3 has built-in LTE connection with music streaming via Slacker Radio. When playing via Bluetooth is does display what you're playing on the touch screen and you're able to control the playback from the steering wheel and on-screen buttons.

Besides the two stalks on either side that have controls like windshield wipers, brights, turn signals, parking button, cruise control and autopilot: the wheel has two scroll buttons that can be scrolled up or down, pressed left or right, and clicked in the middle. My hope is that Tesla can continue to push software updates that will enable more sophisticated voice controls because that's where many of our devices are moving towards and it would be great to say things like "set cruise control to 70 mph" or "open glovebox".

Tesla claims this is still beta but you've probably heard of Tesla Autopilot which, on certain roads, will automatically steer, accelerate, and brake as needed to stay within the lane at whatever speed you set. To enable Autopilot while driving, double tap down on the right stalk and if it's available it will pop a message saying to keep your hands on the wheel and be ready to take over at any time.

On roads when Autopilot isn't available or when it's limited to a certain speed, I will enable normal cruise control with one tap down of the right stalk and it maintains that speed like any other car but if the car ahead slows down, the Model 3 will brake and speed up again to maintain that speed.

Even though it's fun to enjoy the quick acceleration, there's an ironic phenomenon that comes with owning a Tesla because I've found it to be a fun challenge to see if I can achieve better range efficiency than my previous drive.

In the Model 3 if you need to come to a complete stop while driving like at a red light for example, all you have to do is press the brake pedal until the "Hold" icon appears and then you can take your foot off the brake and the car will stay stopped.

When cruise control is enabled it keeps a steady speed even if you're going up or down a steep hill, there's no delay in acceleration compared to my old Pontiac.

It's attractive while being fully electric with zero emissions, it's quick yet quiet, it's fast yet safe, it's compact yet comfortable, it's fun yet relaxing, it can travel over 300 miles on a single charge yet has a nationwide network of Supercharger stations for a quick charge when needed, and most of all: the Model 3 is the future, and it's here now.

Tesla Model 3 is like the flagship smartphone to the electric vehicle & autonomous car revolution, and once you experience it you may get a little sad & nostalgic for antiquated gasoline cars because they'll soon be forgotten in the rear view mirror of what is the #TeslaModel3
