Elon Musk believes that unless people have more babies, civilization will collapse. It's a serious warning.
The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, as well as the aspiring owner of Twitter, has been tweeting about global birthrate declines for months.

The 50-year-old billionaire, a father of at least seven children, has identified Hong Kong, South Korea, China, and the United States as being at risk of "collapse." He recently stated that Japan would "eventually cease to exist."
Musk claims that the concept of overpopulation on Earth is "outdated." His most recent cataclysmic prophecy is about Japan.

"At the risk of stating the obvious, Japan will eventually cease to exist unless something changes to cause the birthrate to exceed the death rate," Musk tweeted. "The world would suffer greatly as a result of this."
However, he warned that Italy is in danger of "disappearing" after its birthrate fell to around one child per woman last year. "There will be no people in Italy," he tweeted.

It was simply an extension of an argument he presented last year.
He's been making this argument for years, but is it genuine, or does he have an ulterior motive?

"So many people, including smart people, believe that the world has too many people and that the population is out of control," he told the Wall Street Journal CEO Council in December.

"It's exactly the opposite. Please consider the statistics: if people do not have more children, civilization will crumble, mark my words."
Musk is not the only billionaire who is concerned about growth.

He discussed the issue with Alibaba founder Jack Ma at the 2019 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, China.
"The population problem will be a huge challenge," Ma predicted. "1.4 billion people in China sounds like a lot, but I believe that in the next 20 years, this will cause major problems for China." And... the rate of population decline will accelerate. You called it a 'collapse,' and I agree."

China imposed birth restrictions on its people for decades in order to reverse a murderous famine. However, the "one child, one family" policy has been repealed, and families are not suddenly having more children.
Musk is concerned by this scenario.

"We don't have to grow dramatically," he says, "but let's not gradually dwindle away until civilization ends with all of us in adult diapers, whimpering."

Musk is concerned that there will not be enough consumers and taxpayers to sustain the global economy in its current form. Beijing shares this concern. However, its efforts to encourage young women to have children have so far backfired.

Even those who can afford a home are frequently unable to purchase one suitable for raising children. This also applies to rentals.
The shift away from full-time employment and toward the 'gig economy,' where there is no guarantee of continuous work, means that more employees are constantly concerned about the next paycheck.
And, like houses, children are a long-term investment.

"Elon Musk's extreme wealth and gender make it easy for him to have many children," says Olivia Nater of Population Matters.
