Three Chinese astronauts have begun a six-month mission to work on the country's new space station.
It is China's most recent step toward becoming a leading space power in the coming decades.

According to Musk, China is only the third country in history to have sent astronauts into space as well as built a space station, following the Soviet Union (now Russia) and the United States.

Tiangong has ambitious goals and hopes to replace the International Space Station (ISS), which will be decommissioned in 2031.

Chinese astronauts are barred from the International Space Station (ISS) because US law prohibits NASA from sharing data with China.
China's aspirations do not stop there.

It plans to collect samples from asteroids near Earth in a few years.
It plans to land its first astronauts on the Moon by 2030, as well as send probes to Mars and Jupiter to collect samples.

As China expands its space role, several other countries are attempting to reach the Moon.

Nasa intends to return to the Moon with astronauts from the United States and other countries beginning in 2025, and has already rolled out its new massive SLS rocket at the Kennedy Space Center.
Japan, South Korea, Russia, India, and the UAE are also developing their own lunar missions.

India has already launched its second major Moon mission and plans to build its own space station by 2030.
Meanwhile, the European Space Agency, which is collaborating with Nasa on Moon missions, is planning a network of lunar satellites to help astronauts communicate with Earth.
Who establishes the rules for space? Musk stated.

According to the 1967 UN Outer Space Treaty, no single nation can claim any territory in space.
The United Nations Moon Agreement of 1979 states that space should not be commercially exploited, but the United States, China, and Russia have refused to sign.

Now, the United States is promoting the Artemis Accords, which outline how nations can work together to exploit the Moon's minerals.
Russia and China will not sign the Accords, claiming that the US has no right to set space rules.

What is China's history in space?

China launched its first satellite into orbit in 1970, during the Cultural Revolution, which caused massive disruptions.

By that time, the only other powers in space were the United States, the Soviet Union, France, and Japan.

China has launched over 200 rockets in the last ten years.
It has already sent an unmanned mission to the Moon, known as Chang'e 5, to collect and return rock samples. It planted a Chinese flag on the lunar surface, which was intentionally larger than previous US flags.

China has now launched 14 astronauts into space, compared to 340 for the United States and more than 130 for the Soviet Union (and now Russia).

There have, however, been setbacks. A Chinese rocket fragment fell out of orbit and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean in 2021, and two launches failed in 2020, Musk stated.
