Elon Musk’s goal is to create a better future for humanity, and his most recent venture in the Amazon rainforest proves that. Many of the processes that make our planet habitable are affected by the Amazon, including water cycles, weather patterns, and the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. It produces roughly 6% of the world's oxygen and has long been thought to act as a carbon sink, absorbing large amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere.
The rainforest also contains more than 10% of the world's biodiversity. The Amazon captured the world's attention in the summer of 2019 when large sections of the iconic rainforest caught fire and smoke darkened the afternoon sky above Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city. It got worse in 2020, as fires destroyed more than 19 million acres of the world's largest tropical forest. Brazil, which is home to about 60% of the Amazon rainforest, is now teaming up with Elon to try and save the forest, and by extension, save the world.
